St Francis was first discovered by Portuguese Sailors in 1575, navigator Manuel de Mesquita Perestrelo named St Francis after the patron saint of sailors. In 1957 Hulett purchased the land and created South Africa's first marina. Keeping strict control over the design regulations, he allowed only white buildings with thatched roofs, creating one of the most exclusive holiday resort towns in the country. Santareme was added later bringing Mediterranean architecture, and views over the sea, and later still the magnificent working harbor, Port St Francis.
